Sania Mirza confirmed that she would retire after the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships, a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 1000 event in Dubai that will take place on February 19, 2023.
“I was going to stop right after the WTA Finals (previous season) because we were going to make the WTA Finals, but I tire my tendon in my elbow right before US Open so I had to pull out of everything,” said Ms Mirza to wtatennis.com in Dubai.
Post her retirement, she plans to pursue academics in Dubai, where she has been staying for a decade now with her family.
In January 2022, she had announced her retirement. She said that her body was wearing down and her motivation levels for every day were not as consistent anymore. However, she felt she announced her retirement too soon and regretted doing the same.
She has endured a number of ailments that have hindered her potential to play, but she persevered as she did not want to be forced into retirement because of an injury.
She is by far the nation’s most accomplished tennis player. Six Grand Slam doubles victories and a world ranking of 27 is just a couple of her career highlights.
