On 1st December 2022 India assumed the presidency of G-20 and the theme for this year is “Vasudevakutumbakam” i.e. it will work towards the promotion of universal sense of oneness. According to PM Modi “India’s G-20 presidency is a unique opportunity to showcase country’s strength to the world”. Also he said that India’s agenda will be inclusive, ambitious, decisive and action oriented.
Around 200 preparatory meetings are expected to take place in 55 cities during the initial months and is also expected to host the summit in September 2023.The G-20 is divided in two tracks, finance track which is led by finance ministers and Sherpa track which is led by central bank governors. The first meeting of the finance track is all set to take place on 13th December at Bangaluru.
Mumbai too gearing up for the first meeting of development working group which is part of Sherpa track. Thus, there are some traffic restrictions in Mumbai from 12th December to 16th December.
The first meeting for global partnership for financial inclusion will take place in Kolkata from 9th to 11th January 2023.
India’s priorities include:
I) Public digital goods and digital infrastructure
II) Climate action, climate finance and technology collaborations;
III) Clean, sustainable, just ,affordable, and inclusive energy
IX) Accelerated progress on sustainable development goals
X) Women-led development and along with these also becoming the voice of developing nations.
XI) India will work towards the promotion of universal sense of oneness
“PM Modi has called for international cooperation to deal with global issues and solve issues pertaining to climate change, terrorism and pandemics”. On the first day of Sherpa meeting the key global issues of inclusive growth, multilateralism, and women –led development as well as 3F (food, fuel, and fertilizer) were discussed along with tourism and culture. This was held in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
While addressing the delegates in his welcome speech India’s G-20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said that India believes that every crisis is an opportunity and leadership is all about finding path breaking solutions in the midst of the crisis. Along with that he also highlighted the responsibilities on all the G-20 Sherpa’s. The discussion concluded with an overview that the platform is in a unique position to provide leadership and financial resources and work together to bring the world back on track to achieve SDG.
